Horticulture is a very broad area under agriculture, it involves not only the production of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants but also the art and science of producing the above listed plants for human use.
Areas in Horticulture
Horticulture is divided into three major areas which are;
- Pomology - which includes the production and marketing of fruits like watermelon, pineapple e.t.c.
- Olericulture - this includes production and marketing of vegetables like pumpkin, carrot e.t.c.
- Ornamental horticulture - which is further divided into floriculture and landscape horticulture.
Other areas are;
- Floriculture - which involves the production and marketing of floral crops like hibiscus, lilies e.t.c
- Landscape Horticulture - this involves production, marketing and maintenance of landscape plants
- Viticulture - which is the production and marketing of of grapes.
- Arboriculture - this has to do with selecting, planting, caring and removal of trees, shrubs, vines, and some other perennial Woody plants.
- Turf Management - this includes all aspects of producing and maintaining of turf grass for sports, leisure or amenity use.
- Postharvest physiology - which involves maintaining the quality of and preventing the spoilage of horticulture.
